Practice Projects

Bubble Project

Picture
You will use Photoshop and the tutorial attached to the right to complete this project. Remember you must right click on the tutorial and choose save file as. or save file to downloads.  You should complete 3  images: easy, medium, and hard.

inspirational speech project

Listen to the example below to get a good idea of what your finished audio should sound like. Be creative and have fun!
Producing an audio track that inspires people and causes them to do something great is the ultimate goal of any song or audio track. This project should give you goose bumps and make the hair on your neck stand up. You will be creating a compilation of inspiring quotes and mixing them together with an awe-inspiring music track to bring it all together.
Choose someone or a group of people that has delivered inspirational speeches. An example of these people include Martin Luther King Jr., Jim Valvano, etc. Using YouTube (which I will need to unlock on your computer), download a couple of their speeches and import the .MP3 files into GarageBand. Cut and splice the clips down to compile a mix of phrases and quotes that inspires and motivates you. Finally, add in a dramatic background music track to bring everything together and make it sound complete. Make sure you monitor your levels and make them even from start to finish!

When you have finished your project, save it as a GarageBand project file (.BAND) and name it lastname + speech. Export it using the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: fursespeech.MP3). Submit your exported project using the form on the right.

T.V. Ad project

Now that you have learned how to make animations more professional and attractive by using symbols to make images and text fade in and out, it is time to put your skills into practice! In this project, you will be creating a TV Commercial for your favorite show or movie.
Find images of the cast, characters, and logo for the channel that your show or movie comes on. Cut out their background to make them look better and import them into a Flash Project - remember, it is important to import only .PNG files into Flash so they will be symbols that you can correctly animate. Use your images combined with some descriptive text to create a commercial that closely resembles what you would see on TV. Finally, add audio of the show or movie's theme song to the background and incorporate other sound effects.

When you have finished your project, save it as a FLA file and name it lastname + TV
(ex: furseTV.FLA). Every time you preview your animation, Flash automatically saves a .SWF file in the same location as your project. Submit only the .SWF file with the correct name - furseTV.SWF - using the form on the right. Use the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements!

trading cards project

Trading Card Example
This project will allow you to showcase your Photoshop skills and create a fun project that will express you interests. You will be making trading cards that highlight your favorite celebrities. You do not have to do athletes - you may choose TV show characters, movie characters, etc.

Using the examples located on the left as a guide, make trading cards with the celebrities' name, TV show or athletic team, and their other "stats". Be sure to include a border and highly designed images to make your cards appear realistic and appealing. You are required to make at least three cards of your favorite celebrity.

When you have finished each card, save it as a .PSD file and name it lastname + card(#). Save it as a JPEG as well (fursecard1.JPG, fursecard2.JPG, etc.). Submit the JPEG files using the form on the right. You may complete this practice project as many times as you'd like throughout the semester - each one is worth a "100" extra credit grade.

splash of color project

Trading Card Example
Something that photographers and graphic editors make the big bucks doing is adding a splash of color to black and white photos. This technique adds interest and elegance to photos of weddings, nature, cute babies, and everything in between. In this project, you will apply the skills you learned in the Black & White Photo Project by adding a splash of color to a monotone picture of your choice. Choose an image of something that you like or will be a good example of your newly acquired skills.

Search on Google to find a black & white picture of your choice. Use selection and refinement tools in Photoshop to color a few particular areas of the photo to add interest and bring life to the scene. Be sure to be very precise with your selection and coloring!

When you have finished the project, save it as a .PSD file and name it lastname + splash. Save it as a JPEG with the same name (fursesplash.JPG). Submit the JPEG file using the form on the right. You may complete this practice project as many times as you'd like throughout the semester - each one is worth a "100" extra credit grade.

interest collage project

Trading Card Example
Now that you've mastered the technique of cutting out the background of an image in Photoshop, display your talents and express yourself by creating a collage of images that represent your interests and hobbies.

Create a new document in Photoshop (Command + N) that is 1000 pixels wide and 750 pixels tall. Search on Google or another image search website to find images that represent who you are. It is important to get images that have a solid color background! This way it will be easy to select the area with the magic wand tool so you can focus on cleaning up the edges and making it neat. You must choose and cut out at least 25 images that represent your interests. Be creative!

When you have finished your collage, save it as lastname + collage. Save a version as a JPEG with the same name (ex : fursecollage.JPEG). Use the form on the right to submit it to Mr. Furse. You will receive a "100" extra credit grade for completing this project.

filters project

Trading Card Example
© 2012 Melanie Jarvis
You have now learned how to create the warhol effect in Photoshop. One of the techniques you used to get a regular photo to look like a sketch was using filters. For this practice project, you will extend your knowledge about filters by applying nine new effects to a black and white photo. After you have chosen the nine filters you want to apply to your photo, use the coloring techniques you used in the Warhol Project to give bright, exciting color to your images. Finally, arrange them in a 3 X 3 grid similar to the Warhol Project by extending the canvas and placing each image in its spot.

When you have finished the project, save it as a .PSD file and name it lastname + filters. Save it as a JPEG with the same name (fursefilters.JPG). Submit the JPEG file using the form on the right. You may complete this practice project as many times as you'd like throughout the semester - each one is worth a "100" extra credit grade.

Creature Creation

Using Photoshop, create a creature from two or three different animals. Merge the animals together so it seamlessly looks like  a real animal. For full extra credit you will create two creatures and put them in a a believable scene. You will most likely use the magnetic lasso, magic wand, clone stamp and layer mask.

Historical Audio

Picture
You have been hired by History.com to produce 1:00 long audio clip for their site. You will be using Garage Band to create these natural sound pieces. First you will find five audio clippings from a historical event. (WWi, WWII, Vietnam, a presidential inauguration, Sept. 11th, etc.) You will edit these clippings together to tell the story of the historical event. Also you will find music that is appropriate to the event.
Save the project as an Garage Band and export these Nat Sound pieces as .mp3. Last name +first initial + history .mp3

Animated Short

Picture
You have been hired as an animator to design a frame-based animated short by Onion Skin, Inc. They want you to create a 7 scene animation of a topic of your choice. (examples - kids going to school ona school bus, cars racing, skateboarder in a state town, surfer catching waves, etc)
you are to follow the directions given by the project manager for the target audience to complete the project.
You will be creating a Adobe Flash animation with multiple scenes. You must have at least 5 scenes but you can have more. The size should be 550 x 400 pixels with a frame rate of 30 fps. This will be a frame based animation so you will have keyframes on every frame with slight movement each keyframe. Each scene must be at least 120 frames, but you will probably go much longer.
