Audio Projects
The audio of a digital media project can either make or break its effectiveness. Appealing, purposeful sound can take productions to the next level, while inappropriate or out of place audio can take away from the overall success. Knowledge and skills in audio production can be used in a wide variety of industry settings - a few of which we will get to practice in this unit. You will start out by editing spoken word and adding special effects to create persuasive radio advertisements. Then you will use your creativeness to produce an original music track and create a complete music album with a group of your peers. Finally, you will add sound effects and background music to an otherwise silent video to help bring it to life.
If you finish your projects before their due date, and have checked the rubric to make sure you're meeting all of the project requirements, try your hand at an practice project. They are meant to further develop your skills and learn new tools and features, and will count as an extra credit grade when submitted. Show me what you got!

Billy Bob Project
In this project, you will edit a raw voice recording to match a script. Your client is Billy Bob's Auto Warehouse. You have his original recording (as you will see, Mr. Billy Bob is not so good at recording a commercial) and the written script of what the radio commercial should say exactly. As you learn how to cut and splice clips in GarageBand, arrange Billy Bob's recording in the correct order. When you have matched the script, add sound effects and background music to make the production appealing and persuasive. Remember to match the script exactly!
When you have finished your project, save it as a GarageBand project file (.BAND) and name it lastname + billybob. Export it using the .MP3 encoder and name the output file the same name (ex: fursebillybob.MP3). Submit your exported project using the form on the right. Don't forget to review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the project requirements! |

Monster Truck ProjectIn this project, you will learn how to add special effects to the tracks of audio in GarageBand, as well as further incorporate sound effects and background music to help your radio advertisements sound appealing and persuasive. Your client is Dorton Arena in Raleigh, NC. They are hosting a monster truck rally and Sesame Street wrestling match (fun for adults and children!). You have been given a raw recording of the commercial, a voice-over from Elmo talking trash to Big Bird, and a sound effect or two. You have also been provided with the final script of the commercial.
Your job is to cut and splice the original audio recording to match the script, then add in some excerpts from Elmo's voice-over. This time, every individual clip that you splice needs to be on its own track in GarageBand. You will use the software to add special effects like track panning, echo, reverb, and others. Finally, you will incorporate sound effects and background music to help persuade your audience to attend the monster truck rally and Sesame Street wrestling tournament. When you have finished your project, review the rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the requirements! Save your project as a .BAND file and name it lastname + monster. Export your radio advertisement using the .MP3 encoder and save it with the same name (ex: fursemonster.MP3). Submit the file using the form on the right. |

Group Album Project
The GarageBand software has an extensive built-in library of music loops that can be selected and assembled to produce an attractive, professional sounding song track. It also has the ability to record music from an instrument and add all types of special effects and sound equalization.
We will be using the GarageBand App on the Apple® iPads to create one original song and then export it. After creating another song on your classroom computer, you will team up with your group members to design an album cover and track list. We will cut out the printed album covers, burn all of the group's songs onto a CD, and then assemble a finalized group album. When you have finished your three original songs, make sure they are in .MP3 format and name them with a creative name. Submit them using the form on the right. Then use the Peer Evaluation Survey (see link on the right) to rate your group members' contributions to the completion of the album. Please be honest! Your responses are totally anonymous. |

Foley Artist Project
video to make things look and sound more realistic. The audio technicians that work to create these sound effects are called Foley Artists. You can find out more information about the Foley Artist career path here : http://www.filmsound.org/foley/
In this project, you will become a Foley Artist as you add real-life sound effects to an otherwise silent nature video. The goal of the sound effects are to make the video more realistic and entertaining - reaching more of the viewers' senses and capturing the audience more effectively. Download the video located on the right. You will see a nature scene with water, animals, a train traveling through the mountains, and an airplane flying into the sunset. Also included on the right are some sound effects that will be helpful and a list of GarageBand loops that work well with the given video. You are to incorporate the sound effects and background music into the video to help it appear more realistic. When you are finished with this project, save the .BAND project and name it lastname + foley. Use the directions provided on the right to export your video - complete with realistic sound. Name the output video the same name (ex: fursefoley.MOV). After you have reviewed the project rubric to make sure you are meeting all of the requirements, submit your finished project using the form on the right. |
